Tunnelling Operative

Building the underground tunnels needed for services such as rail lines and water works.

Overview

As a Tunnelling Operative you will have tunnel vision in assisting with the excavation, support and forming of tunnels and shafts in the ground to provide an underground space, tunnel or shaft.

This may include hand tunnelling, machine tunnelling, pipejacking, sprayed concrete lining, shaft sinking and drill and blast.  

This role may necessitate lengthy periods of time in a confined environment, working underground.

  3. Handle and convey goods and materials to and from the workface. 
  4. Guide and control the movement and operation of plant, machinery and vehicles

Salary

Newly trained Tunnelling Section Engineers can earn in the region of £25,000 to £30,000.

Trained with experience, Tunnelling Section Engineers can earn in the region of £30,000 to £35,000.

Senior or chartered Engineers can earn in the region of £35,000 to £45,000 or higher.

Salaries typically range depending on location, level of responsibility and chartered status.

Qualifications

Depends on the employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or experience, particularly where practical or technical skills are demonstrated will be needed.

Training is typically provided on-the-job, but a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Tunnelling Operations will likely be needed.
