The arrangement and design of windows and other external glazed elements in a building.

Overview

This is a job role common in both the new build and refurbishment construction sector. 

As a Fenestration Installer you could be working on domestic and commercial buildings fitting any glazed element of the project, including windows, doors, bi-folds, rooflights and conservatories.

Fenestration is often the most impressive feature of a building creating a strong visual impact, so you’re sure to be proud of your handiwork.

You’ll work with a broad range of materials, including UPVC, aluminium, steel, timber and composite and on a wide variety of building structures using different construction methods.

This occupation can progress to more specialist occupations through further training, for example curtain walling, surveying, and working on high-rise, high-risk buildings which must comply to specific regulations since the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

Qualifications

There are no set qualifications, but it helps to have GCSEs 9-4 (A*-C) in maths and English or equivalent.

You must also hold a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card or equivalent to work on a site.

Employers like people with on-site experience. If you don’t have any, it’s worth looking for work as a Glazier’s Assistant or Labourer. Once you are working, your employer may offer training and qualifications through day release to college, or via the On site Assessment and Training route (OSAT).
