Overview
Dual fuel smart meter installation forms a key part of the Government mandate to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy management.
As an installer, you’re responsible for the safe installation, exchange, commission, decommission and ongoing maintenance of smart metering systems and associated equipment and communication systems.
You’ll also need to provide an explanation of how smart meters work, as well as providing up-to-date energy efficiency advice to the customer.
It’s a role that’s physical in nature, and may involve lifting and moving of equipment, and working at height and in confined spaces. You’ll carry out a high level of safety-critical activities while working in customer properties.

Salary
The average UK salary for a Smart Meter Installer is around £35,000.

Qualifications
There are no set requirements to start training as a smart meter installer. You may have an advantage if you’ve got experience and qualifications in a similar area like gas or electricity installation.
Some employers may prefer you to have a minimum of three or four GCSEs including maths and English or equivalent qualifications.
Employers will set the selection criteria and will include a recognised background check, equivalent to Criminal Record Bureau/Disclosure and Barring Service (CRB/DBS).
On completion of a course, you’ll be eligible to apply for membership with the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
