Overview

As a digital engineering technician, you’ll produce detailed solutions to achieve the optimum performance of built environment projects using digital models and presentations. 

You’ll know how to use software, sketches and electronic visualisations to support digital engineers or other functional specialists to complete complex tasks. 

The digital techniques that you develop knowledge of and expertise in include: virtualisation and simulation; digital measurement; communication of complex engineering principles to stakeholders digitally; integration of construction data and information; and adherence to the standards and regulation of digital information. 

You could progress onto a construction design manager, construction quantity surveyor, construction site manager or civil engineering site manager role.

Salary

The starting salary for newly a qualified technician is usually between £17,000-£19,000 a year. Experienced technicians can earn around £25,000-£35,000

Senior technicians can earn £37,000+. Salaries typically depend on location, employer and level of responsibility.

Modern construction develops and uses some of the latest technology including Building Information Modelling (BIM), Computer Aided Design (CAD) and even nanotechnology.

Qualifications

Typically five GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths and English; or a Level 2 Apprenticeship is required. Employers have their own specific entry requirements.

Progression could lead to Construction Design Manager, Construction Quantity Surveyor, Construction  Site Manager, and Civil Engineering Site Manager.
