Data Architect

Set the vision for an organisation’s use of data and is responsible for the design, structure and maintenance of data.

Overview

You’ll need to be technically-minded with a head for numbers for a career as a Data Architect, as it’s your job to develop, optimise and oversee an organisation’s conceptual and logical data systems.

You’ll be building complex computer database systems and creating a blueprint for creating, testing and maintaining that database.

Data Architects are required across a broad range of sectors from Government bodies to healthcare – practically any industry that uses data – and it’s your job to ensure the accuracy and accessibility of data relevant to an organisation or a project.

You’ll be designing and building data models to fulfil the strategic data needs of the business, which could involve designing, supporting and providing guidance for the upgrade, management, de-commission and archive of data in compliance with data policy.

Typically, you’ll work as part of a larger team within the ICT department, and you’ll need to be a good communicator as you’ll have to explain complex, technical concepts to non-technical staff.

You’ll need to understand data governance and you’ll be developing and setting data standards for an organisation, as well as championing and governing those standards across the organisation.

Salary

An early career Data Architect with 1-4 years, can expert to earn around £50,000, while someone with up to 10 years of experience can earn in the region of £60,000.

An extremely experienced Data Architect at the top of their game can earn around £70,000.
