Damp Control and Timber Preservation Operative

Prevent damp from rising up from the ground – something that causes serious damage to buildings.

Overview

As an expert in damp control or timber preservation, you’ll be an exterminator of insect or fungi attack and rising or penetrating dampness within buildings.

You will have the superpowers (skills) necessary to be able to treat these issues and keep them away.

You may work with a team of operatives, specialist damp and timber surveyors, clients, other trades, including electricians, general building contractors, etc.  

Housing associations, councils or local authorities, are just some of the sectors who need help from you.

The work carried out by a Damp Control and Timber Preservation Operative is unique in relation to the wider construction industry to prevent the deterioration of the fabric of the building. 

You will have basic skills in plastering, joinery and bricklaying in order to make minor repairs to damaged elements. This will extend no further than minor repair work when necessary. For example the removal and replacement of skirting boards or flooring following timber treatment; or the removal and replacement of a small number of bricks following the installation of a telescopic air vent; or a small area of plastering.

Salary

We don’t have an exact figure for this role as it’s in development across the UK.

However, newly trained damp proofer’s can earn in the region of £17,000 – £20,000. Trained with experience damp proofers can earn in the region of £20,000 – £30,000.

Salaries typically range depending on location and overtime. Self-employed damp proofers set their own pay rates.

Qualifications

There are no formal requirements to enter training as a Damp Control and Timber Preservation Operative, a role that is under development. However, it helps when looking for work to have GCSEs grades 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent in subjects such as maths and English.
