Overview
As a Building Services Engineering Craftsperson you will design, install and service engineering systems used to heat large buildings, such as office blocks, factories, schools and hospitals.
You will also test, pre-commission, commission and decommission large-scale engineering systems which operate by moving temperature-controlled water around the inside of buildings, providing heating and cooling, and utilise fossil fuels and sustainable energy systems.
You’ll develop detailed knowledge of systems and train to work to specifications and instructions, liaise and work with other trades and suppliers, solve problems, maintain standards, and contribute to configuration.
Previously referred to as Heating and Ventilating (H&V), Craftsman, H&V Fitter, H&V Fitter/Welder, H&V Pipefitter or Mechanical Services Fitter.

Salary
Newly trained building services engineers can earn in the region of £24,000 – £27,000.
Trained with experience building services engineers can earn in the region of £27,000 – £35,000. Senior, chartered or master building services engineers can earn in the region of £35,000 – £50,000.
Salaries depend on location, employer and level of responsibility. Salaries and career options also improve with chartered status.

Qualifications
Employers will identify any relevant entry requirements in terms of previous qualifications, trainability tests, or other criteria.
Typically, most candidates will have English and mathematics at level 2 and Information Communications Technology (ICT) level 1 on entry. All qualified craftspersons must achieve the Level 3 Heating and Ventilating Craftsperson qualification prior to undertaking an end-point synoptic assessment with an independent assessment organisation.
